Celebrating National Small Business Week

It’s National Small Business Week! Observed this year from May 4–10, 2025, this week is dedicated to recognizing the resilience, determination, and vital contributions of entrepreneurs and small business owners across the country. Small businesses are the heartbeat of our economy driving innovation, creating jobs, and building vibrant communities.

As a proud Neighborhood Business Development Center (NBDC), we are committed to empowering local businesses with the resources, tools, and support they need to grow and thrive. This week—and every week—we celebrate the passion, creativity, and hard work of our small business community.

Spotlight: National Small Business Week Virtual Summit

In celebration of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and SCORE hosted a Virtual Summit on May 6–7, 2025. The summit featured a series of workshops covering a variety of topics relevant to business development and support.

We had the opportunity to attend the sessions and wanted to share key takeaways from one particularly important workshop:

Mobile Workforce Security: Safeguarding Your Business on the Move

In today’s digital world, cyber threats are more sophisticated—and more mobile—than ever. This session focused on how small business owners can better protect their operations from cyberattacks, especially those targeting mobile devices.

🔒 Did you know?
75–80% of threats to businesses now originate from mobile devices.

Here are best practices small and medium-sized businesses can implement to improve mobile workforce security:

  • Conduct a security assessment with a professional to identify vulnerabilities.
  • Limit access to corporate information through corporate-issued devices only.
  • Keep all mobile devices updated with the latest software and security patches.
  • Train your team on cybersecurity best practices—regularly.
  • Simulate a cyberattack drill to assess readiness and response.
  • Back up your data consistently and securely.
  • Avoid using public or insecure Wi-Fi networks (like those in coffee shops).
  • Understand that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to cybersecurity software or tools.

AI-Driven Phishing Scams

One alarming trend highlighted in the session was the use of AI-generated voice phishing—where scammers mimic voices to deceive individuals into sharing sensitive information.

Tips to protect yourself and your team:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited or unexpected phone calls, even if the voice sounds familiar.
  • Never share sensitive information over the phone unless you’re 100% sure of the caller’s identity.
  • Use a family or team “code word” to verify identities.
  • Avoid saying "yes" to unknown callers—it can be recorded and misused for voice authentication systems.

🧠 Stay alert. Stay informed. Stay safe.
